In what further indicts Western Railways’ negligence over the tragedy, documents show officials allotted only Rs 1,000 to renovate the bridge out of nearly Rs 12 crore that had been sanctioned by then railway minister Suresh Prabhu.
The pink book of the Western Railways is an official document which lists the amount sanctioned and the allocation made for respective projects.
Point number 673 in the pink book pertains to the footover bridge at Elphinstone Road station which was to be formally named Prabhadevi railway station on Friday, the day tragedy struck.
The amount allotted to the bridge in 2016-2017 is mentioned as Rs 1,000, while the total sanctioned cost was Rs 12 crore. The allotment for the current fiscal was raised to Rs 35 lakh.
On Saturday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a meeting of the Railway Board in Mumbai and took some key decisions aimed at making the Mumbai local trains safer. Among them was the decision transfer 200 officials at the head office to the field. Moreover, CCTV cameras would be installed in all Mumbai suburban trains.

In case of a disagreement, the matter shall be referred to the Railway Board for a final decision, which has to come within the same 15 days.
